Red Yarn

I have red yarn available.  I have several shades of red that I dye.  Not all reds are available on all yarns.  The Melt the ICE hat pattern is available on Ravelry:  Melt the ICE hat

Left to right: Merino Bliss DK in Royal Red, Rubies, Dragon's Blood, and Targhee Worsted in Dragon's Blood.  Pictures of Reds are extremely difficult!  These are not perfect, but at least show the shades in relation to each other.

I made several changes when I made my hat.  I used Merino Bliss DK in Rubies, but then wanted a taller hat, and more gradual decreases.  You can find my changes at the bottom of this page AND on my ravelry project page here:  Julie's Melt the ICE Nisse Hat

Merino Bliss DK is a 100% Superwash Merino yarn.  I have Rubies, Royal Red (lighter than Rubies), and Dragon's Blood (a very dark red).  I also have Cabernet, which is a very purplish red.

Yak Bliss DK is 65% Superwash Merino, 20% Silk, 15% Yak.  I have Dragon's Blood available and Rubies coming soon (will dye on 2/5/26). The base color of this yarn is grey, so the colors come out deeper and more muted.

Westside Worsted is a 100% Superwash Merino yarn.  I have it available in Rubies.

Targhee Worsted is a 100% US made yarn from Targhee wool.  Targhee is a lovely springy wool, still next-to-skin soft, but not as soft as the merino.  I have it available in Dragon's Blood.  On this base, the Dragon's blood is not quite as dark as it is on the Merino Bliss DK.

Julie's Melt the ICE Nisse hat:

I made the hat, and then the fit just doesn't work for me.  I would want the ribbing to be folded.  And then it was too short.  I decided I wanted more of a Nisse hat, so after following the DK instructions to cast on (I used a tubular cast on), I worked 5" of ribbing.

So...  Modified:
After 5" of ribbing, I switched to size US 7 (4.5mm) needles.

Work 3" of stockinette.
Put stitch markers after stitches 13, 40, 67, and 94.

Round 1: *Knit to 2 stitches before stitch marker, SSK, slip marker, K1, K2tog; repeat from * 3 times, knit to end of round
Rounds 2-3: Knit

Repeat rounds 1-3 until 12 stitches remain.

Work 1 round knit
Work 4 center double decreases.
Cut yarn and draw through remaining 4 stitches to close the top of the hat.  Weave in yarn.  Follow Melt the ICE Hat pattern to make the tassel.  (I blocked my hat before adding the tassel.)
